Every family on the Island of Hawaii deserves safe and clean drinking water.

Neighborhood Water Service in HawaiiProblem - Many island residents use catchment tanks, neighborhood water systems and other private infrastructure for household water.

Catchment systems require significant maintenance and put families at risk for waterborne illnesses.

On-site wells are vulnerable to poisoning from the 50,000+ cesspools on the island.

Solution - Hawaii County will invest in a significant expansion of wells, treatment facilities and delivery infrastructure.  The County will also explore the possibility of private-public partnerships where it makes sense to properly manage clean water supplies and waste water treatment.

The County will also offer to acquire private water systems and integrate them into the county’s comprehensive water infrastructure.

Cesspool closures will help protect well-water users from underground contamination.
