Michael Konowicz - District 9 Candidate

Michael Konowicz is a resident of South Kohala, a broadcast meteorologist and environmental news reporter, and currently Director of the Waikoloa Village Association.

Up until he announced his candidacy for public office, he was also the President of the Big Island Press Club, Hawaii’s oldest press club. He was the Chair of Hawaii County's Cost of Government Commission where he was a strong advocate for responsible spending and efficiency improvements to core government services.

Michael is also active in the Big Island Jeep club where he explores remote parts of the island, participates in trash-pick-ups, beach clean-ups, and tree-plantings.  

Professional Experience

Michael is a professional broadcast meteorologist and environmental news reporter. For more than 20 years, he has forecast and reported on weather and other Earth-science news stories around the globe for primarily a mainland audience. Michael's work appears on television, radio, print, and online.

Michael holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science with a Focus in Broadcast Meteorology; he also holds a Certificate in Environmental Journalism and a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology. He also holds A.A.S. degrees in radio and television and an A.S. degree in communications. Michael earned his higher education in Hawaii, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Ohio.

Michael is also Hawaii County’s newest CERT member. Administered through Civil Defense, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is designed to facilitate community resilience. To be a member of CERT, Konowicz participated in 16 hours of online training and 16 hours of in-person practical training in Waikōloa on first aid, fire-fighting, and basic search and rescue skills. He also participated in a CERT drill in Waimea.

As a member of the Big Island Jeep Club, Michael has participated in a wide range of environmental volunteer efforts including trash-pick-ups, beach clean-ups, and tree-plantings around the island. He is a 4x4 enthusiast who believes in caring for the 'āina and keeping our island clean.

In 2021, Mayor Mitch Roth appointed Michael to the Cost of Government Commission, a County board that evaluates the government on the island and makes recommendations to improve overall efficiency. After unanimous approval through the County Council confirmation process, Michael served as both the Chair and the Commissioner for District 9.

In 2022, Michael was elected to be a Director of the Waikoloa Village Association, a position he still holds today. He also served as a Director of the Elima Lani AOAO inside Waikoloa Village in 2023.
