Caryl Burns. Core 24 Candidate for Hawaii County CouncilOverview

Caryl Burns is a Public Health Nutritionist, and a longtime resident of Kailua-Kona. As a committed wife and mother of two adult, she has a long-standing commitment to public service and the health of families.

Her work with patients at Bellevue, the largest psychiatric hospital in New York City, has given her insights into what affects people with mental health and addiction issues, and with homelessness.

As a public health worker in California she was responsible for Lead Poisoning Prevention and First 5, a program to assist parents of children in their first five years, emphasizing the importance of reading to and nurturing children, and dental health.

Caryl has a B.A. in sociology from Indiana University and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley.

Professional Experience

Caryl has extensive small business experience as a partner in a natural fiber clothing business in California.  Her responsibilities included managing multiple stores, developing training materials and implementing state-of-the-art inventory systems.

Inspired to change careers in her mid-40s, Caryl dove into science and research, working in multiple public service settings, including the Naval Hospital in Oakland, a Senior Day Care agency, and local grade schools.  Her public service work finally lead her to managing nutrition education programs for multiple counties in northern California.

In 2008 Caryl was hired as the Coordinator of Nutrition Education Network for the Neighbor Islands in Hawaii where she managed a federal program that provided matching funds for nutrition education.  Caryl recruited teachers in 40 schools.

Caryl has also been highly successful as a grant writer for programs like "Linking School Gardens to Classrooms and Cafeterias".

Ms. Burns is a proud member of the Ohana Aina Association, advocating for local families that depend on short term rentals. In the last ten years she has helped many friends and relatives learn to use their number one asset to generate needed income to pay their bills. She has also been active in shaping local legislation that otherwise might have greatly limited or destroyed the ability of home owners to use their homes to generate needed income.

Understanding that teamwork is the key to success in any organization or endeavor, Ms. Burns joined the Core ’24 team to work together to improve Hawaii County.
